Overview

The Egyptian flute, built by Erik the Flutemaker, is a rather unique instrument. The flute is fully made of bamboo. It is played like a western flute, blown from the side and held horizontally. Everything you play sounds great, it will have a very eastern / egyptian melodic character to it because of the way it is tuned.

It is suited for all hand sizes. This flute is tuned to itself, meaning that it doesn't correpsond with a regular instrument tuned to A440, but it sounds beautifully in tune when playing solo.

How to play this flute?

  • Aim your airflow against the edge of the embouchure hole
  • This requires some practice and patience
  • The flute is held horizontally, this too requires some practice
  • There's 4 fingerholes on top, and a thumbhole on the back
  • Cover the holes with the pad of the fingers, not the fingertips

The musical possibilities

  • Anything you play will sound very eastern / egyptian
  • That's because of the intervals between the notes
  • The flute has a reach of 2 octaves

Trivia for the ones that know music theory:

  • This flute allows you to play the following intervals in two octaves:
  • Root, major third, perfect fourth, perfect fifth, minor sixth
  • Also known as 1, 3, 4, 5, b6
